Location: Athens, Greece
Product: PAMARES
Completed: 21 November 2024

Athens, Greece

Challenge:

Air pollution has become a major concern in Athens, with particulate matter (PM) concentrations exceeding the WHO recommended levels.

Athens needed to reduce harmful particulate matter, especially PM 2.5 and PM 10, to protect the health of its residents and visitors.

Solution:

PAMARES was strategically deployed in various locations across Athens, including Omonia Square, a central hub of activity within the city. The system operated by continuously filtering the air, removing harmful pollutants and particulate matter to improve overall air quality. Comprehensive tests were conducted by comparing air pollution levels with PAMARES switched off and then switched on.

Results:

Efficiency: The results of the tests revealed a significant reduction in air pollution levels when PAMARES was activated. During the testing period, air quality in the vicinity of the air purifier consistently improved, with pollution levels dropping below the WHO recommended thresholds for 80% of the time. Both PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations experienced notable decreases, indicating the system's efficacy in mitigating fine particle pollution.

Comparative Analysis: The comparison of background pollution levels in Athens with those observed in Omonia Square highlighted the substantial disparity. Pollution levels in other areas of the city were found to be over 20% higher on average, underscoring the urgent need for intervention measures such as PAMARES.

Health Benefits: Noticeable improvement in respiratory health among residents and visitors, with a reduction in pollution-related health issues. Enhanced air quality contributed to a healthier living environment, promoting well-being and reducing medical expenses related to air pollution ailments.
