Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities and the largest city in Greece. This ancient city is the fourth most populous capital city in the European Union. In the run up towards the Olympic Games of 2004, and up until today, the metropolitan area has undergone tremendous development.
With a series of projects, Athens aims to address its traffic and the environmental problems, in pursue of a more sustainable city, generally improving the quality of life. The occasion of World Environment Day, made Athens install four of StaticAir's innovative outdoor pollution reduction systems.
Athens wanted to realize cleaner air for it's newly renovated Omonia Square, which is one of the busiest hotspots in the center of Athens. This specific square was chosen because of high concentrations of polluted micro particles. A continuous flow of vehicles and the large buildings around Omonia Square, keep air pollution trapped. The result, is poor breathing air quality, affecting everyone who passes through. The reduction of fine dust (PM) was a priority. StaticAir delivered PAMARES installations to make a difference compared to the old air quality situation.
A technical plan was made to integrate the PAMARES systems smoothly with the architecture of the Omonia Square. The realization of PM fine dust reduction, air quality data sharing, as well as a connection to the Smart City Dashboard of Athens was a central goal. The PAMARES systems were positioned on light poles with fast plug & play installation, which takes little time and causes no interference with the surrounding traffic.
After installation, the systems were tested and showed a clear reduction of more than 20 percent. The systems were able to improve the air quality at Omonia Square.
